the hunger to want to be bigger, be stronger.

its a personal battle, i don't need a partner, but i do need a spot..haha.

i always believe, if you cant lift weight under your own steam, then the weight you working is to heavy. partners should only be there to spot your last 2 - 4 reps.. not your entire set.

When you feel like giving up, do two more...

Well, my dad used to do powerlifting for a while, so he used to be really big (still is big, but he's been doing a lot of cycling, and he's older, so he's not as big as he was back then), so he was always an inspiration.

Also, both me and my dad have had the genes of being really skinny if we don't work out (saw photos of him when he was a child, he was skinny as a rake!). Anyways, I inherited those genes from him, but then when I moved to England for two years back when I was about 12 (almost 13), I started going to the gym with my dad (after he said to my to try out a couple of sessions with him) early in the mornings before school. What impressed me most was how energised I started feeling, I was awake and ready for the day, unlike my stepbrother who always did the whole "*groan* waking up is hard" thing.

So that was my first motivation, just because it made me feel great. Then when I started seeing results (bearing in mind, when you're 13 those results are still minimal), and then you start enjoying gym for that reason.

When I came back to South Africa, I did gym on and off, but never with any real intensity, training program or goal, that is until a mate and me started working out together at school when I was 17. We got the school's biokineticist (is that the right word?)to help us out with a program, and then we started off with that. We started getting more and more intense with our sessions, started using creatine and all that, and saw quite good results.

I've gone from being a 191cm, 60-65kg guy, to a 191cm 90kg guy since then. Just the thought of going back to the way I was scares me. Also, the endorphin rush you get from gym has got me hooked now. If I don't work out for about a week or so, I start to feel it. After three weeks I get depressed, start eating less (but at the same time, more unhealthily).

So for me, it's a lifestyle, an addiction even. I love the gym. It's the one place where I can work out my frustrations, maintain a healthy body and positive self-image. The fact that people now notice me, girls compliment me, etc. also helps, but that was never the main reason for my gym, but it sure is a bonus now!

As for motivation, yeah, I don't really need any, it's my addiction. Even on days when I don't feel like it, I go anyway, afterwards I'm always glad I did. If I really do want to bump up a bit of motivation, I'll do what the rest do, watch a video of the pros or something. The bottom one is my recent fave, showing all the more old school (Arnold, Sergio Oliva, Lee Haney, Bertil Fox, Tom Platz, etc.) bodybuilders doing their thing

To you it may look like I just did a push-up... But in fact, I just bench-pressed the world.

I was extremely skinny - use to wear layers of clothing to look fatter. So always wanting to look better and seeing the results paying off is what motivates me to train. And that feeling after a great workout = priceless!

Trained once with someone. It defintely does help in terms of motivation but he didn't like my training program. I am still looking for a training partner that does not chat away, and that has the same training goals as myself. Most guys just do exercises not knowing what part of the muscle they're working. If I need a spot I usually just ask the VA guys.

MAX OUT your expectations of what is possible for you...you CAN handle the weight
