I think i would rather buy places that are run down... fix them up... and then sell them! Some nice easy money.

Or property development if you know GOOD contractors.

If money was no object... I would bring GOLDS gym to SA... Would overtake Virgin and PF!!

I would seriously suggest opening a elegant gentlemans club B) . Not a whore house... A place where men will feel more at home doing business in the company of beautyful office assistants! :P

I work with the I.T side of many local fast food restaurant's and our local brands are doing very good debonairs has over 300 stores they are opening a few in Mauritius, England and they already have outlet's in Dubai and upper developed parts of Africa.
Essentially any famous brand restaurant (debonairs, steers, fishaway's ect) does very good.
As for chicken restaurants Galito's is a very popular up and coming restaurant not O'Galito's!
Then there is Giramundo's which is very popular and also a Famous Brand brand.
And there is also Barcelo's chicken but I have never worked with them.
I would say that a fast food franchise is a very good investment because you pay your owner ship costs and you 1st months stock cost and that brand finds you a spot that they believe will succeed.
I know the Fish and Chips fast food franchise is very popular choice for franchisees as it costs about half of the other franchises and is very successful!

I think imports is a decent business avenue only problem is being at the mercy of fluctuating exchange rates and oil prices

Sorry guys Apparently it is true, cause its happened to certain people already, so I’m not taking any chances !!

lol, that's where I got his quote from... I was actually just joking and not taking advice from someone that can't shut up.

Back to topic: I see that even KFC's in smaller towns are doing very good. My hideout is somewhere in central SA and there's a KFC, Fish Aways and Steers right next to each other (probably the same owner) and the KFC is always far busier than the other two. I prefer the Fish Aways and there is never a line, but the KFC is always crowded.

Debonairs (most pizza chains actually) must make a lot from deliveries and take aways coz every pizza place I've been to barely ever has more than 5 people in it. Which means they don't have to rent out a massive area I suppose

Location, location, location

Opening a teasers next to a church will never work, but opening one next to a high school... that's another story.

Transportation...

(Edit: Transportation as in freight or livestock using a big truck...)

You will have to find a good drivers though and it's still a job that will require allot of your energy and require patience, but the rewards are well worth it if you ask me.

I was always very interested in this, just dont really know how to go about it and I always thought that there were an excess of freight companies

I would try establish this around mpumalanga, there is plenty of smaller coal companies that are looking for cheaper transport options, since the biggest transportation company around there is Oosthuizens transport and then a couple of smaller ones such as Parsons

You can't go wrong with a well established franchise business in the right location but even the big names sometimes get one or two wrong.

Take Pizza Hut who's owned by KFC tried twice to establish that business in SA and failed.

Someone mentioned something about Burger King and Taco Bell, the problem is IMO that our market for that type of business cannot support two of those major players in that market segment. Taco Bell won't work because it just would not appeal to the greater population of SA.

Is our market it has to be something that appeals to the majority of the population. I once met the owner of the KFC at Barahwanath taxi rank and that's the biggest grossing KFC in the country. What makes that business perfect is that its in the ideal location and you have the right customer base.

I wanted to open one of those fish and chips spots when they just came out but damn every time I found a location there was one around the corner already. The problem with that was that there's now like 5 in a 5km radius and you're thinning out the business.

My ex girlfriend's sister was the manager in charge of opening new Nando's stored and they really look after their customers same as KFC. But that why its R15m to open a KFC

Someone i know at one stage wanted to open a postnet and the location was very close to an already existing branch. Postnet stats showed exactly the opposite of what you are saying here. If the service is good at both brances they will feed off each other.
But that only applies to branches of the same company. Like MacDonalds the recipe has to be exactly the same at each branch no matter where it is located. A Burger and Fries must taste the same in Hong Kong as it would in Puerto Rico. People flock to familiar places.
