I have the G23 and struggled to conceal it at first. but I've come to realise its what you wear that makes a huge difference. golf shirts make it virtually invisible but if i try wear a normal T it sticks out quite bad. Im wearing IWB at the moment with a cheap maverick holster(not ideal I know but was going to spend 800 on a holster just yet)

So I cant find the Rem 700 that I want anywhere, and the new consignment is just way out of my price range.. so Im going for the Howa 1500 in stainless. Now the question of calibre?
I've been offered a 7mm rem mag at a very good price which is quite enticing especially for long range shots,
or a .308 for all round decent calibre and ease of use? seeing as I will be reloading are the price of bullet heads that much of a difference?
Im buying this week so any help would be appreciated thanks.

Howa is also one of the best groupng rifle out of the shop .

7mm hands down. Its got power... Possibly all youll ever need. A real hardhitting flat shooter. Plus its got a tad less recoil that the 300.
If I had to buy a rifle right now, it would be the 7mm.
Dont think you should worry about price too much on reloading.

The 6.5 is a .264 caliber, just shy of the magic 6.5x284WM.
Herewith some info from Wikipedia
"Because 6.5 mm (.264") bullets have relatively high ballistic coefficients, the 6.5×55mm has seen success in long range target matches of 300 m (328 yd) – 1,000 m (1,094 yd). The 6.5×55mm cartridge was widely used in biathlon competition until 1975 (when it was replaced by the .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR) rimfire cartridge), because of its inherent accuracy and historical popularity with the Scandinavian nations who have dominated this sport. The 6.5×55mm was and is used for 1,000 yd (914.4 m) target shooting disciplines like F class. The cartridge is also used by Scandinavian target shooters that use the Sauer 200 STR (Scandinavian Target Rifle) as their competition rifle"

ou can also have a look at the ballistics here

Again, if you plan to reload, this is the route that I would take. Howa brings an awesome stainless steel 6.5x55 Varminter out for less then 10K, if I remember correctly. Gives you enough money for decent glasses
And if you wondered about the hunting aspect, due to the excellent BC of the bullet, it will out perform (outpenetrate) 30-06 etc, especially on long shots. A very good friend of mine recently hunted a couple of animals with his 6.5x284, he shot koedoe in excess of 500m, passthrough one shot kills.

It always blows my mind that people will buy the most expensive gun, the cheapest bullet and then expect great results. Spend a bit more money on premium bullets, and success will be guaranteed (obviously, shot placemenst is critical, this goes without saying).
In an experienced hunter's hands, a 243 can bring down an eland easily. However, to cover myself, I would caution that a novice not try this.

I do not mean to hijack the thread, but since it's closely related I'm hoping it's ok to post? otherwise, my apologies, I'll just discontinue...
I did my competency tests (handgun, shotgun and rifle) a few weeks ago and will now be looking for a suitable handgun and rifle. Any suggestions? Keeping in mind I'm a lady so nothing too rough haha! I've been thinking of a 9mm, however, not close to making my mind up yet.
PS the handgun would be for selfe defense, and the rifle to go hunting men :woohoo: I mean go hunting WITH THE men

For the rifle, depends on what you want to shoot with? What game do you want to shoot, no use in suggesting a 223 if you want to shoot an eland. Also vice versa, no use suggesting a 375 etc if you just want to shoot up to kudu size
Regarding the pistol, it all comes down to what you are comfortable with. Go and see first what sits nice in your hand (and speaks to your heart). Also cycle the slide etc (this is usually the problems, women in general cant cycle a slide, so test if out. If you can, great).
Regarding the calibre, See if you can shoot a couple from a different people. My wife shot the 9mmP and then the 45ACP. She prefers the 45, she says that it just feels right, whereas the 9mm has a sort of "snappy" action in the recoil, hurting her wrist.
So give a more info, then we can work from there. I personally is a revolver afficionado...

SV gave great advice and your best bet is to go and try them all and pick one you like and feel comfortable with.

@ SV, I won't be hunting anything too big. I'm leaning more toward a bushpig, springbok or rooibok. Good suggestions relating to the handgun. That was my idea, but I just wanted to get a general idea of what women tend to lean toward(it's good to know what your wife's experience was)
@ admin, that's a good way to look at a revolver. I have shot with 3 revolvers before and I do like the feel 2 of them had. The simplicity is also a huge plus.
I will have a look around next weekend, but at least I have a better idea of what to look for and where to start looking. Thanks!

IF you 2 in the family, let one have a revolver and one a pistol - that is just my choice
Most shooting ranges rent out guns at R50 - R100 and then just pay for ammo

The key is practice, and to be familiar with your weapon.
Also, as a tip, do not motivate for self defence, as you need A LOT of paperwork etc to prove it. I also have it on confidential terms that success rate of SD motivations are not that high, whereas you motivate it for backup during hunting etc, it would be approved more easily.
also see ifyou can join an accreditated hunting/sport shooting organization, get them to endorse your motivation, that way you are again improving your chances greatly of the license to be approved.
For your rifle, and the animals that you would shoot, i would suggest a 223 Remington. Great calibre, flat shooting, hard hitting power. Ammo is readily available from shops, if you want to reload, brass etc is easy to come by. You can easily take down up to kudu with this calibre if your shot placement is good.
Low recoil rifle, does not induce flinching. I use my 223 Rem for shooting out to 400m easily.
