Knees hampering leg training

I have been unable to train legs for three weeks now due to very painful knees. I tried once again this morning but couldnt do more than 2 squat sets. I have a bad right knee for a couple of years now. so bad that sometimes i can hardly walk or climb stairs for days after a good leg session. When doing a squat movement even without weights the kreeking of the knee joint is clearly audible. I can also feel things moving around within the knee when i hold it and extend and contract my leg.
Fortunately I am kind of blessed in the leg department, for example i never have to train calves as i have naturally big calves. I can even get away with training legs hard every second week.
I train from home and I'm kind of limited to squats, lunges, leg extensions and hamstring curls.
The thing is that due to the current pain and inability to train legs it is now starting to affect other areas of my training routine like deadlifts, barbell rows and shrugs.
Has anyone got any advice for me? The squats and lunges are really killing me but on the other hand i really rate squats very highly.
Thanx guys

Could be any number of things, someone like Spike will have a better input but without him seeing you it would never be conclusive. Save yourself some time and pain and get it checked.
Also - if you get it checked and they say you need an operation, get a second opinion - surgeons are very quick to operate when other protocols may work just as well.

Did you have any injuries or accidents on that knee?

As a laaitie I had a very ugly infection in the joint itself. Never experienced such pain in my life! It was almost like my joint was frozen in place and any movement hurt like a muthafucker! it started as a pimple on the knee cap, then a boil, then a hole sank into the knee and it turned black with a grey foul smelling puss. Thats when i went to doc> thought it was cancer or sumthing. Ever since then i have had trouble with that knee and its getting worse as the years go by.

Did the doc open it or drained it? You said both knees- it is probably the right one that got weak with that puisie's vrot wortel and by nature you started putting more weight and pressure on the left knee to protect the right one. So it might be because of the extra strain on the left knee.
I'm sure Evo will agree to that- had my right knee op 12 days ago and the left knee without the op is so painful at this stage, but it is working much harder to protect the injured one.
The kreeking is usually a loose kraakbeentjie or a stoute meniscus. dit kan 'n klapgeluid ook maak as jy die been reguit maak en weer buig.
And if your knee is swollen- it can take up to 6 months to recover or for the swelling to go down- and whenever you put (squat) pressure on it again before it is completely down, it won't heal and will stay painful. I got that from Dr Daan du Plessis- the knee guru in Pretoria who does the Springbok's knees.
I would definitely suggest you go see a knee orthopedic. They can take xrays or a Mri and the guessing will be over.
You said you were in the Cape region right?

Is jy nooit teen pokke ingeent nie?

My surgeon for all 3 knee surgeries in Cape Town was Dr John May at Claremont Hospital, he's not into his weight training but he does Comrades and Oceans etc so knows what it means to be very active and the depression factor of missing out on exercise.
Being a surgeon he does tend to favour operation but to his credit he also explores other avenues first and will recommend 2nd opinions and possible other forms of treatment if at all possible.

Ended up going to doc. According to him I have pattelular tendonitis. He showed me in detail on few charts. Prescribed arthrotec and ibuprofen gel. Also advised the ice on the knee like Ondier did and strongly suggested that I take extra care to warm it up and stretch properly before training.

Stretch the quads, hip flexors, hamstrings, glutes and calf 2-3 times per day. Get warm before hand then go through the motions.
I'll get back to you with a great stretch website....

it occurs in tall&heavy people, and guy and girls who are still growing. I fall under the Tall and heavy category, but i have had it for the past 2 years.
The straps help a lot for leg press and full squats. its about R80 per strap, and they will last u for ever.
hope it helps.
