Deadlifts vs Pull Ups was created by Deadgoat
Hey guys just wanted to know from the forum which is rated higher for overall back development.
Which would you place 1st in your back workout (in terms of order of performing exercise)? Reason I ask is because deadlifts are very taxing, for this reason do you place them 1st or last?
And what would you guys find more impressive a 275kg deadlift or 10 strict pull ups with a 20kg plate between the legs? (I'm nowhere near either, to avoid confusion)

Sorry guys Apparently it is true, cause its happened to certain people already, so I’m not taking any chances !!

start with pull ups cos u cant cheat on a pull up...so get the back warmed up with pull ups, and then move over to dead lifts... i have seen someone do pull ups with a 50kg dumbell strapped to him!

Shot DJ, you wouldn't be friends with Pierre Spies would you? That is fucking strong, he's basically pulling himself and his girlfriend up  he could probably nail a one arm chin up

why not alternate? best of both worlds
one week u focus on the one exercise, next week the other one

The problem is I'd like to make strength progress along with good back development, either I get the 275kg pull or the 20kg pull up. Going for both will leave me disappointed
when I did deadlifts 1st my back grew but my rowing and pulldowns numbers didn't move. When I do pull ups and rows up front my back still grows but my deadlift doesn't move

Howzit deadgoat.

What's your main objective for training back?

To have a strong back or an impressive looking back? IMO wide grip pull ups target more parts of the back than dead lifts do. You're hitting lower, middle, lats & upper back where as with deads your targeting lower.

I do deads more as a core strengthening exersize. If i had to choose one of the 2 for overall back development, I'd say the pull ups win.

Peace...

@rowan I'm going for the Johnny Jackson style physique with the strength to back it up.

@DJ which do you think is better just for lower back development deads or hypers?

I think I know what you mean, kinda like a GHR of sorts? If I feel my lower back working while squatting I usually take it that I'm leaning forward too much, kinda like a squat-morning

that means u arent bending at the knee enough, squat on a smith machine for a while, just a 20kg on each side and make sure that your knees bend as much as you can even go bellow 90degrees,also stretch the quad in between sets, stretch for 20-30 seconds each quad,by squatting on the smith machine your back will be in a set position and by focusing on bending at the knees and getting as low as possible will take out the bend in the hips,i have only recently found out that this was my problem too when i started training with a partner thats also a Personal Trainer, we are working on my squat technique to sort out the same issue as you are having! also try and do sissy squats and lean back as far as u can, that will also show you how to emphasize the quad knee bend with out bending at the hips and lower back!

Funny thing is thats exactly how I started out squatting! My flexibility while doing back and front squats is perfect but with free weights I struggle badly. I'll go back to the smith machine for a few weeks to see how it helps.
Tried box squats, has improved my glute and ham strength but still have flexibility issuses. Will post a video later on in the week.

Deadlifts are the only way u gonna get thickness in the back i dont care what anyone says, u want a awesome back... deadlift!

Pull ups are the way forward as well, weighted drop set to normal body weight always gets a good pump. I follow what DJ told me ages ago try get 50 reps even if u have to do 1 rep of 50 sets.

No lets not deadlift as I need a double hip replacement haha

Lets say you do 10 5 rep sets of pull ups, how do you fit in other exercises like deadlifts around this? Sounds like you'll have a good back and get good at pull ups but your other lifts will suffer

This only works if you put the bar lower than usual. Jay Cutler also recommends them and they work great. I always used them cause i can remember what my hammies felt like after a night at the roulette table.
