I had shin splints from playing squash, and had to stop playing, struggled to train calfs for a while. Never experienced it when doing hamestring curls. I don't think it is shin splints, does it hurt when you run or walk uphill?

It can't be shin splints. Shin splints are aggravated when you apply downward force on the shin, ie walking or running. Indoor cricketers at top level get them a lot. Go see a physio and ask them what it is.
