Meh! Drove by it this morning for the first time, wondering WTH goes down in that gym. Never judge a book brehs.
CPT / Stellenbosch here, I might join a private gym if my traveling requirements gets less. There are some decent private gyms here, would gladly support the smaller guy than the big corp.
Sorry to derail, OP and Mods.

West Workout in Somerset West isn't much of a detour if you're travelling from Stellies to CT. They are very powerlifting friendly. The owner has competed for a long time.

Ive been competing in Powerlifting over the past 2 years. Competed in the SAPF nationals and placed top 5 of my weight category.
First thing you need to ask if you want to compete in a tested vs untested federation. If untested, SAPF is the fed to join (and yes they DO test blood and urine samples at comps for top lifters and random others).Contact your provincial fed (in CPT its the WPPF) and theyll let you know when thr next development comp is.
For untested, Rhino Powerlifting is the fed to join. I dont know much about them but I do know they big in Joburg. They may have one meet planned for CPT though.
Best thing I can recommend is do your first meet, eveb if you feel you not ready. You'll meet lots of the guys in the sport and will n learn a great deal

With respect to training styles, its a case if different strokes for different folks
For me, I do phases of intense Sheiko training and then coast using Wendlers 5/3/1 to recover for 2 or 3 months.
With respect to dropping water weight for a comp, PLEASE dont do it unless you intend to make the SA team...it messes you up big time on comp day because weigh in is 2 hours before lift time, which is tight to get 100% for you first lift. I've seen ppl bomplb out because of this

Gyms in Cape Town are unfortunately few and far in between. Mustang and Westside are powerlifting friendly. There is a bodybuilding gym in Epping where a couple of powerlifters train..in fact we had our last few championships there. Equipment isnt in great condition though. Cant remember the address but its in Bofors Circle close to the AACL.
Lots guys train alone at their house (like me), a buddies house or at the normal commercial gyms.

Nice thread gents, have been thinking of powerlifting as well fpr a while now but can't seem to find a gym that offers that type of training and equipment around the Pretoria north townships, concerning dudes numbers I was pushing squats at 135kg and deadlifts at 155kg on good days weighing just over 80kilos on 500mg test a week back in 2012/13 so I believe those numbers aren't too far fetched but its more than likely a bit stretched for chest my pb was 105 for 2 reps lol but off gear was no where close, but if you really want to do powerlifting then just approach your local VA/gym and find an instructor/lifter who has previous experience in the sport and take it from there
