Boulder Shoulders. was created by pocketmuscle
Hi gents,
I have an issue when training shoulders.
I would say it is my weakest muscle, hence why I train it when fresh on a Monday.
My training program consists of seated military presses, dumbell side raises, BB wide-grip upright rows, DB rear lateral raises etc.
The problem that I have is, my front delts are alot stronger in comparison to my side and rear delts. That is the reason I focus more on side and rear delts.
When doing say the military press, I do 50kg BB x10 reps. Very often I would feel my triceps burning as hell.
But when doing side lateral raises I can only push to about 10kg DB's. And most of the time I actually feel my traps and my neck more than my delts.
I have had the issue for very long and try to fokus using my delts and not traps.
I cannot remember feeling my delts being painful or worked the next day as opposed to like I feel my back or chest or any other muscle.
This is very annoying for me as I feel that broad, defined shoulders are the most "attractive" muscle for me - thanks to Kevin Levrone's awesome shoulders..
Do any of you have the same issue or can maybe advise me how to correct this?
Would appreciate your tips/recommendations.

Bud watch this video with Victor Martinez below. It's one worth bookmarking. He gives very good tips on correct form with training shoulders. I'm sure you've been over this, but if you are feeling your traps more with lateral raises then you need to figure out what is wrong with your form. It's going to be hard to explain that on a forum without seeing how you are doing the exercise. But this clip with Victor should be helpful:

Tx MA,
I understand it is actually very difficult to give someone advise without seeing how they perform a certain exercise.
Will definitely have a look at the video and give feedback.

I had the same problem for years bud. My front delts and triceps dominated all benching / chest press movements and my lats, traps and rhomboids dominated most shoulder movements. Just due to years of bad form.
I found Ben Pakulski's MI40 program to help me correct all this. His videos were very informative on correct form and contracting the correct muscle. It meant leaving my ego at the door though because I had to substantially drop weight on a lot of the movements because the target muscle was much weaker. I'd recommend checking out his series as well.

Yeah you have to most times drop your weighs to make sure form is 100% and to target only the desired muscle group.
In the past on my progress pics Furk and Pyro pointed out to me my traps dominated my upper body and delta are lagging. I figured it was from trying to do certain movements to heavy and sacrificed form allowing my traps to be engaged and then over powering the delts.
Like IK said leave the ego at the door. Don't be shy to use your girlfriend's weights after all there is a difference between training for strength or for hypertrophy...

Besides form that can be a huge factor and should definitely be corrected, I see most guys on shoulder day jump straight into military presses. By the time they start focusing on side and rear delts, the shoulders are tired and traps and tri's starts kicking in.
Obviously your shoulders are very strong pressing 50kg DB's. Ever tried focusing on the rear and side delts first?

+1 for Ben Pakulski's stuff, the one guy at the MI40 gym does some really informative videos on ranges of motion and angles for most muscles.
His name is Joe Bennett aka hypertrophy coach

I try to change it from week to week. But I respond best on supersets I think. The pump is much better, but not near where I want it to be. Normally front delts I would go heavier say 4 sets and 8-10 reps. Side and rear delts not so heavy, 4 sets and 12-15 reps.
Have started my day with side and rear delts, funishing off with front.

I agree BPAK all the way. Using varying strength curves with all my muscles
has greatly helped my physique.

Check youtube for a video about the "traps trap" , sorry cant remember who put it up. I had the same issue struggling to feel any isolation in my delts. What has helped immensely and put on decent size is doing single arm dumbbell shoulder presses. These help take the traps out of the movement, two handed your body naturally involves the traps to move the heavy weights together, try and push outwards rather than over your head.
