Sup Guys

I'm 6,7ft and I have injured my lower back twice from doing dead lifts.
I have watched many video's on using the correct form but I get scared to go heavier as I don't want to get injured.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Then don't go heavier. U are quite tall and the taller u are the more difficult it is to do squats and especially deadlifts. Stick to a weight that u deem to be "safe". That's of course if your form is actually spot on like u say. Go heavier on barbell rows and see how that works for u

Or do rack pulls.

To you it may look like I just did a push-up... But in fact, I just bench-pressed the world.

Don't deadlift much more than you can squat with good form. Otherwise you will take the strain on your back too early in the deadlift when your hamstrings and quads are supposed to do the initial work. Then your back will round out and you're screwed. At your height you really have use your legs more than most guys when deadlifting. Try a wider stance?

One of SA's best ever powerlifters Arno Lambrechts is 6'7" as well. Maybe you can find some videos of his form on google.

Agree with MA. For deads you want to get nice and low with a wide stance so you can drive out with the quads and glutes. The more upright your torso the less strain on the lower back.

I used top train with Arno tha mans a monster (hence his nickname being monster).
I would say there is nothing wrong with conventional deads, because you want most of the tension on the back.

@hammer have you considered getting yourself a proper powerlifitng belt?

Bud I am 6ft5 (thought I was 6ft3), fact is if you are tall and your torso slightly longer then your legs then deadlift is a recipe for disaster and injury. Stay away if this is the case. You can google this as well.

Deadlifts are my best lift so maybe Im just blessed in that way.
But maybe with proper form and steady progression he could build a nice dead.
Alternatively check out good mornings, also a back exercise thats maybe a bit better for the back.

You want the tension distrusted across the whole of the back yes. But if you are too tall the first part of the lift almost becomes a stiff leg deadlift where the lower back takes all the pounding, lifting first before getting into a position to drive out from with the legs(this is unwanted)

Great advice already in this thread. I think lower back injury can result from a few things - rounded lower back/not "blocking", hips too high at start of concentric, pulling with back instead of pushing through heels, not keeping the bar close enough to scrape skin off your shins, etc.

That said, if a particular lift just doesn't work for you, don't do it. Unless you're a competitive powerlifter, you're not obligated to perform any specific lift. Deadlifts are an excellent exercise as we all know, but contrary to what most people seem to believe even the 'big three' aren't absolute prerequisites (depending on your goals obviously)

I had a debate this morning about rack lifts and deadlifts.
The debate was that rack lifts are there to boost the ego and why do half range of motion as opposed to full range.
I was rather pleased with my 200kg rack lift for 8 reps this morning but that came to a sudden halt when this fella peed on my battery!!!
Oh and its not like he is a inexperienced lifter either.

Whats your guys views?

Rack pulls are done to improve a sticking point on your max deadlift.

Rack pulls are the top half of the motion of dead lifts so it takes the glutes hamstring portion out of it. It builds strength in the spinal erectors and helps with back thickness. If dave henry does them in conjunction with normal deads then i will carry on doing them thanks.

Interesting read on elitefts by Dave Tate. Its obviously geared towards powerlifting but im sure bodybuilders can take something from it:

If you need any tips for your technique on any powerlifting lifts just do a youtube search for Dan Green. He gives lots of advice on there. He holds the 100Kg and 110Kg world record totals. If you need inspiration going for a PR just watch his videos. Beast!
