PL/Sports Gyms in Cape Town?: was created by Stanabolic
Are there any powerlifting gyms in Cape Town or maybe just some good gyms with platforms, power racks etc?

I swear every time I walk into my gym there are less and less plates. The other day I was deadlifting and after a few reps my grip gave out at the top and so the weight dropped and scared the shit out of everyone in the gym. Shortly after a couple of the staff came to me to complain about the noise and that I was using most of the 20kg plates so people have to wait for me to finish. It would also be nice to train around others who compete in PL or at least train heavy.

Anyone know of any?

Personally I'd highly recommend Evo Fitness. They're a strength and conditioning gym with power cages, chains, power bands, platforms and specialty bars plus a shit load more. They are however a private facility and only work on a 1 on 1 basis or semi private.

oh and I own Evo, so quite bias.

Alternatively you have West Barbell in Somerset West, plus a few Crossfit gyms scattered about the Cape now as well.

Yea, but training at Evo 5 times a week will cost you at least R2500 a month :( . Would be cool if Evo offered a more affordable option for guys who want to go and train on their own without any interference. But for professional/sponsored sportsmen Evo must be ideal.

We have a few national and provincial athletes with us (and some overseas celebs), but none of whom are sponsored and all pay their way, such is the lack of support and funding for sports in SA unfortunately.

I hear what you're saying Muscleaddict, but membership is just not our model. We did look at it, but we wanted to keep the numbers down, so none of our clients would have to wait for equipment or have the facility too packed like typical membership gyms. Most of our clients are mid 20's - mid 40's training 1 on 1, 2-3 times per week strength work with us and then their other sports/hobbies elsewhere.

The only thing our clients have in common is commitment to training and getting results. If they don't want that, they don't get to train.

If you're wiling to make the drive, SUSPI in Stellenbosch is a good gym, nice drop platforms, plenty of squat racks, etc.

Just the one corner of the High Performance centre area of the gym.

That's a sweet set up - wish we had the cash to drop on Eleiko plates and bars!

That is a awesome gym. Just hate Virginactive in the afternoon when the gym is filled to capacity with no room to even move in it and not to mention the long wait to use the equipment.
Where would one be able to buy one of those squad racks and are the Eleiko plates easily available here in South Africa?

Power racks are easy to come by and not too badly priced. Check out www.evolvconcepts.co.za , they've made some specialty equipment for us and are pretty good. Otherwise you probably have to import.

As for Eleiko! Fuck! Last time I checked, a 190kg Oly set was R24,000! Does have a lifetime guarantee, but that's a huge chunk of change.

Oh I agree, the one place I'm always happy! Awesome equipment, nice place for hardcore training, and hey, it always helps when the poppies walk in for the 15 min ab classes :woohoo:

It is actually a bummer that we don't have more hardcore gyms in SA. I am in Durban and there are very few BB gyms. All the places have some weights, in between the yoga class, behind the spinning room or opposite the crèche!!
It can just get so metro fkn sexual!!!
I train at a VERY cool gym where many National champs have trained religiously. Great Mon-Fri, but weekends are closed mostly.

BTW, anyone else here from Durban??

Shut up and Squat!!

Damn!! That is the kind of gym I'm talking about! Stellenbosch is a bit of a drive though. I'll just have to deal with VA and they will just have to deal with the noise.
