i think this affects everybody on the forum and hope some of the more knowledgeable guys can help me. ive read a lot on the topic of kidney problems and have some worries. there are many studies that show excessive protein intake (basically what all of us do) over extensive periods of time have a negative effect on kidney function. (and obviously our steroid use doesnt help much!

is it safe to take so much protein all year round or should you take breaks?
it may not cause problems in the near future but what about when we are 40? 50? 60?
is enough water an adequate way of ensuring kidney health?
we have milk thistle etc for the liver but are there kidney supps for guys like us?

thanks

Cranberry Extract is for your kidneys.

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.

I read somewhere that in order to damage your kidneys you have to eat 6g protein per pound (or was it kilogram) of body weight, for a period of time... Thats a lot!
(Sorry can't remember where I read it, nor can I find it now, and yes I know there is a huge difference between kilogram and pounds... )

Milk thistle also assists the kidneys...
Water helps flush them clean too, but overdoing anything causes damage.

Basically only people with existing kidney problems and/or high blood pressure have to worry about excessive protein consumption damaging their kidneys...

Usually 1 - 2g protein per POUND of body weight is accepted to be safe.

If you go to Woolworths , they sell cranberries in those little 200g bags.

I buy that and toss them in with my eggs and oats.. adds flavour and the benefits of the berry .

You're bit off track - Active people - I assume all of us here :P needs 1.5gr to 1.8gr per kg of lean body mass to sustain themselves. That does not make provision for major muscle develepment.

If you weigh 200 lbs you will be getting in between 200 and 400g protein per day according to N3rd. I think thats enough. I think you were thinking kg and not lb LSJ

Here is a read or two for interest sake

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1474076

First one is quite interesting - ever heard of "RABIT STARVATION SYNDROME" in humans?

Second one is case study done on strenght training athletes
