Howsit guys,

So I am selling my land rover defender, aka the love of my life, purely because as a student I cant run it anymore. I am going to go with a corsa bakkie, the 1.4. So not exactly a dream car but at least its not a chick wagon.

Has anyone here had any experience with them? How slow are they? Life expectancy? etc

Would really appreciate the feedback as I am going to be finalizing things within the next two weeks..

Thanks.

Hey Bud,

I had the 1800 sport a few years ago and would seriously buy another one without hesitation.
The worst thing I did was put 19" mags on it, I ripped through tyres like no mans bussiness, NEVER EVER again!!!

My mate had the 1700d and he put some serious km's on it. He sold it within a heat beat.

I am led to believe the 1400 is a bit sluggish, even more so when you add aircon, but then again which 1.4i with aircon also has woema???

The Load space is just incredible with all that volume on the back.

Personally I just don't like the move going to the Chev badge (just a personal thing)

shot for the feedback man. I am going to put 17" on and drop it by 40mm.. :) looking forward to that..

The original plan was to go for the 1.8, however I have friends who have it and they said its just not worth getting rid of my landy if I am going for the 1.8 because it sucks fuel.. Probably not to the extent that my landy does, but still need to keep it as low as possible.

Ya the chev thing is annoying, the new one chev just released looks so kak.

ye speed isn't exactly a 1.4s forte hey :P just gonna put a free flow and a air filter with cold air induction on so it sounds 'nice' at least

I also had a 1.8 Sport some time ago and if you want a small bakkie the Corsa Utilities are the best. I will not buy one again though.

GM sucks.

At 7000km on the clock, I started noticing a singing wheel bearing and took it to the dealer to have it checked. They responded that the sound is normal, but they obviously forgot that I'm a boertjie and know what a fucked bearing sounds like.

GM, refused to replace the bearing... a R300 part...

Took it to a privately owned garage and they pressed out the old one and replaced it with a new one and the troubles were over. But I stripped my moer and sold it shortly afterwards at a massive loss.

Aaaaa the youth of today... :P

After driving through and over and in potholes (lately sink holes) on our roads with the Landy, you really need to think this through. I agree it looks good, but ur extra costs with sliced tyres and sqaure mags will set you back a few good cycles..

Cycles VS Tyres and Mag repairs???

Yes, but they are all equally pathetic these days when it comes to after sales service. If it's still under warranty you will be guaranteed they will never find the technical issue you asked them to have a look at and funny how you always have new rattles after every service, the moegoes probably loosen every bolt and screw they can find just to piss you off. And they always have to adjust my fucking mirrors and seat to some incredibly uncomfortable position... can't they just leave my settings alone for the 1km they drive around the block?

ya that doesn't sound great. I have heard a lot of stories about their bull shit.. Definitely something to take in mind I guess, even if I am buying second hand.

I know its pretty damn pointless on a 1.4, but my mate was talking about chipping his. Anyone know more about them? I have read a bit but its all retailer propaganda. How are they with regards to insurance? And on that point how are after market exhausts and filters with regards to insurance....?

Hey man, the Insurance isn't so much the issue as the warrenty. BUT....and there's always a but....lol
You get 2 kinds of 'chipping'
Chip Tuning, where they load new software on ur ECU (Engin Computer something...) which they can unload when you take it for a service. But the loading and unloading wil cost you money each time
The you get a 'Piggy Back' Plug and play system which plugs into the ecu harness. You unplug it, remove it and do the service, put it back in afterwards.

Dastek is your best option for Plug and Play Chips
SAC (Steve's Auto Clinic) can do the whole Stage 1 conversion.

You check get their websites, they normally have a before and after KW and NM table to see ur gains.

Shot Rookie :) Will give it a look and if I go for one i'll do the plug and play one..

Really hey Gab? They doesn't sound great at all.. But from what I have read it is very hit and miss with regards to their cars.. I know people who have hated theirs and others who have loved theirs. My mate has a 1.4 which has 280 000kms on the clock and he still loves that thing. Whereas my other friend has the 1.8 and wants to kill it..

Will definitely have to search around for sure and make sure i find one with FSH..

there is a major mechanical fault on the 1.4, the valve springs tend to break, my dad owns a private service center and the problem is common. the worrying thing here is the owners of these cars are not leadfoot drivers but normal middle aged people. go diesel or 1.8 if u can afford it.
