People always have issues with this but lets say a close friend or a member of the family could be treated for disease x all because we understand it from the use of experimental animals, would you then have a problem with it? NO.

I think we do care. But we place our trust in the authorities managing the humane killing/processing of animal products.
You see the public outcry when such things surface? Its huge.
I also trust that animal testing is done in a similar controlled fashion.

Of course some lab tests done on animals are fatal, but how else will potentially fatal dosages of drugs be determined for example?
I think people forget that everything they buy from a butchery was killed to become food. The question now is, what is the difference between killing an animal for food and killing it for research? Obviously, dying from slowly being poisoned by drugs is not nice, but the reality is that we have no choice and best would be to prevent cruelty at least.

The site gives some great statistics on the matter and a pretty good conclusion too...
"An athlete exists to excel. He breathes to excel. And his rationale is to do everything possible to be able to excel. A pro athlete makes his living from his sport, so it's no exaggeration to say that he believes he was put on earth to be the best athlete possible" Tom Platz

With that in mind pharmaceutical compnaies would be able to pay big money for a couple guenea pigs, and poor and UNEDUCATED people would be drawn to it... I, personally, think this would be far worse.
And also like Deadgoat says there is a difference between animal experimentation and animal cruelty. The one can be justified in certain circumstances (like those which Admin hinted on) but animal cruelty? that should be punished

Its more the focus on the beauty industries experimenting on animals, like I said before, this cutex company pouring cutex down animals throats to see when they die. That kind of experiments are just plain wrong.

Dogs sold to the university by the North Utah Valley Animal Shelter had holes cut into their chests and necks and pacemakers attached to their hearts in order to induce irregular heartbeats. The dogs were then killed and dissected.
Cats from animal shelters had holes drilled into their heads in one experiment. They also had hard plastic tubes forced down their delicate throats for archaic intubation training exercises even though the University of Utah — like U-M — has access to modern simulators.
See, this kind of experiments just pisses me off!!!
