In theory they can rig it if they want, but I really doubt it.

When someone buys a ticket all the numbers attached to that ticket is transferred to a secure database, this database is mirrored so that there is an exact clone at all times. 1 hour before the draw they remove both drives and store them separately.

Now they perform the draw...

After the draw both drives are read separately for the winning tickets. A parity check is also performed to validate that the drives are still exactly the same, should one differ from the other they may void the draw.

Theoretically, they can rig the process by using a very powerful computer to look for combinations that no-one picked, this can be done pretty simply using a method of elimination. It works like this, they pre calculate all possible combinations (Think there are 14 million) now, when you buy a specific combination they eliminate it from the long list. In the end they will be left with combinations no-one chose (if any) and then rig the machine to draw those numbers so that nobody wins...

Rigging the machine might not be that simple as it's made from perspex. If they used a metal rod to push the ball into the tube you could use magnets to increase the chance of selecting certain balls.

I have absolutely no idea about SA's Lotto since I don't play it, and the reason for that is the maths behind it: theoretically they should be makings millions because the reward relative to probability is weighted in their favour.
For example, the probability of a coin toss is 50/50, red or black at the casino is 50/50- yet the reward is 45 based on a stake of 50. Thats 90/100, so on average (in the long run)they make 10% on all bets.
That's just the numbers game, if they want to cheat, you can imagine the profits available.
I'll end with a quote I once read: "The Lottery: A tax on those bad at maths."

My uncle worked at Sun City as a programmer and he told me they rigged all the machines at different times of the day and night, he is now working at .................. and they also do it, on a day they “take” that’s what I call it between R235 000 – R1,5 mil. That’s in one day!

Yeah watched a show called The Real Hustle in which they showed how casinos can cheat customers.

Basically all slot machines must pay out 70% of the amount of money put in per day, and the casino can adjust that percentage as they wish but thats illegal.
You can basically "time" the slot machines so you know when they're likely to pay out, the longer the machine goes without paying the 70% back the more chance you'll have of raking it in

Sorry guys Apparently it is true, cause its happened to certain people already, so I’m not taking any chances !!

Doubt they rig it, it was controlled by the mafia but those times are long gone.. The amount they make on interest in their accounts they have no reason to scam it

I also dont think its rigged-if you check the numbers that have been drawn historically, its a pretty even spread.

THe real money in the lotto doesnt lie in the lotto winnings-it lies behind the scenes-the jackpot is 30million, but the takings for that jackpot are 20-30x that. Thats where the real corruption lies.
Its non profit because they steal all the goddam money

i find it really stupid how some people win the jackpot and agree to accept R3000/month for the rest of their lives. All the lotto is doing is paying them a fraction of the interest of their winnings every month. So they didnt actually win anything...DOFFFFF!!!

What do you mean? Don't they pay you the amount you won?

If I win the lotto I want them to give me all my money immediately and keep their noses out of it.

You have to complete a course where they teach you not to spend all your money at once. Then you can choose how you want your money, all at once or in payments. But "R3000" a month is just the annuity payments, I'd want my Capital as well.

You have a choice, you either take the lump sum,or you can take R3k/month for the rest of your life, even if you live to 200 years. They still give you a few lessons in financial management also free of charge.

WTF, are there people dumb enough to take R3k per month? What if I die tomorrow then my family gets nothing?

I spent R3k per month on toilet paper. I will go for the lump sum and fire the adviser they give you immediately.

Then the R60 million gets written off the books of the Lotto, the CEO buys a plane, and there's no corruption. Sorted:)

I've heard they use this as a ploy stating that for your safety... (I highly doubt it is 3k though) :) but they have their ways of trying to hold on and make multiple payments holding on to this massive interest

Are there people studpid enough to take R3000/month..............YES SIR!!!!

You have to remember that the group that makes up roughly 75% of the population also has a "unschooled" figure of about 70%. This is also the group that gets promised a stove or fridge if they vote for a certain party (same promise since 1994 or is it earlier?). Nothing against them but they do get manipulated easily and its their own people that they trust that snaais them.

So yes, i reckon most do except that payment

Even more so if you just take into account the life expectancy of people based on ethnic group...

Then the majority really loses out!!!

What about the Urban legend that everyone who wins the jackpot ends up fucked somehow or something terrible happens to them or they die soon after winning.Like they get plagued by badluck.I've heard this happens to 95% of jackpot winners all over the world.

EG:

William "Bud" Post, who won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania Lottery in 1988, had a brother who tried to have him killed for the inheritance. Post lost and spent all his winnings. He was living off Social Security when he died in January.

• Two years after winning a $31 million Texas Lottery in 1997, Billie Bob Harrell Jr. committed suicide. He had bought cars, real estate, gave money to his family, church and friends. After his death it was not clear whether there was money left for estate taxes.

• Victoria Zell, who shared an $11 million Powerball jackpot with her husband in 2001, is serving time in a Minnesota prison, her money gone. Zell was convicted in March 2005 in a drug- and alcohol-induced collision that killed one person and paralyzed another.

• Evelyn Adams, who won the New Jersey Lottery twice, in 1985 and 1986, for a total $5.4 million, gambled and gave away all of her money. She was poor by 2001, and living in a trailer.

Gerry Beyer, who teaches estate law at Texas Tech University, has written about people who come into sudden wealth — such as lottery winners, sports figures, actors and actresses — and how they end up losing it. Many don't realize that if they spend their money, rather than investing and living off the earnings, "there's nothing to replace it," Beyer says.

@Tiny, true that...

But they had the life expectancy of people by ethnic group mention on 5FM this week...

Hispanics are on top.
Caucasians second.

And at the bottom of the list.... those that make up the majority of this country.

I stand under correction... But blacks had something in the line of 60% of the life expectancy that hispanics had...

So if you are black... please dont opt for the R3000 p/m payout!
Mother nature hates you...
