why don't you hack your brain!
dude, IT is crap, sold my first PC when I was 12, built up, put add in paper, etc... and been doing it ever since... it's crap and I hate clients and I hate everyone... hope you can handle it, but I sure as hell hate it.. If it wasn't for my salary i'd find another type of job ASAP. When I first went to the UK while I was looking for work I was doing building, that was so much better, I was outside and happy. not inside hacking away on a fucking computer..
I hear you man!!! I hate having a talent for something I don't enjoy doing. I've moved to management level now as I thought it would get me further away from hands on IT, but all it really means I am now more of a jack of all trades then ever, plus I need to look after stupid techies and account mannage, dammit!!!
I've done it all in terms of administration. Linux/Windows/Cisco/Exchange/Plesk/Ensim/C-panel/VM environments/Lotus Notes/Mailenable/asterisk I work for a kind of company that doesn't believe in outsourcing, buy a book and figure it out.
Watching Jay's videos on the typical day of a bodybuilder just makes me sad
The worst is when my Mom gets her friends to ask to come fix their machines, I want to cry...,

LOL, I hear you... oh please can you fix this, all my icons are big. i'm like WTF, do I look like a level 1 techie.. or I have a virus and windows doesn't start. I don't have any driver cd's or my windows disk... man, jeah I can fix it but fok me its pathetic and really gets to me and takes time, most of the time I have no idea what the virus does, I need to research it and then find where all the reg entries are, and, dot dot dot.
glad i'm not alone on this one.
or everytime you go to visit your family they like oh can't you just help me copy the files off the camera, ok mom take out your notepad and please write this down, step for step...

OR
"You studied IT? Can you fix our printer?"
Those were the worst, but yeah most of the time it is "fix our internet" or "remove this virus" ...
Can't someone say "You studied IT right? Help me install this aftermarket turbo/supercharcher/camshaft kit in my Nissan" Its related

One nice part of my job. We take big clients to "The Grand", those girls never ask me to fix their PCs. I love corporate credit cards
I bet you wouldn't mind 'fixing' their pc's...

That's disgusting Pump, the only reason I even go there is to help these girls through university. It seems all strippers are studying to become psychologists. lol
Where would this countries mental health be at if it wasn't for me and other well meaning supporters of the youth and their futures... I ask you this!!! I don't want to blow my own horn, but I think I've paid for many a varsity degree... and motivated many others to make it their life mission to ensure this cause will never die.

Hey people,
I know quite a few of the forum'ers are working in an IT related field, so I'll state my case here.
I have a BSC IT degree and I'm currently doing my Honors BSC IT, I don't like programming.
What work is there for me, part-time this year
and full-time next year.
Should I consider doing IT advisory at KPMG (any opinions)?
What exactly dont you like? A Honors is scraping the surface and only equips you with the tools to start your career.
I'd GRAB the job if i was you. At least you will gain some real-world experience. You might just change your mind.

If you have a line of communication with KPMG as them about their innovations division. From what i hear its really a big think tank and everybody there goes home with (1) loads of job satisfaction and (2) a nice chunk of spare change at the end of the month.
Thanks dirk, will do.

I don't like typing code into a computer.
"GRAB" the KPMG job?
Uhm, well if applying counts, then I "GRABBED" it
Thats the thing, in the degree, programming/coding is maybe 10% of the whole degree, and in Honours we do NO programming, My honours experience will be benificial at KPMG.
I don't have to like coding, I can do other things in the IT field

We have Electronics engineers developing software etc.
The INF and COS subjects(Unisa) all steer in the direction of software dev. COS teaches coding and thought paterns to code.
Inf teaches you how to design software and networks.
The rest of the subjects line you up for the different applications/domains.
Remember the day when we were called Analyst/Programmers?
That is predomanantly your role as an IT scientist.
I don't like typing code into a computer.
Thats like saying you dont like typing. The stuff at varsity isnt all that demanding and you often feel like a Data-typist. The real world is mostly not like that.
You have done the hard part - stick it out and try the different areas out. Nobody forces you to stay at a place you dont like. Just remember - BSC IT Hons wont get you to the goodies immediatly - you need the milage; unless of course you are some IT-god!
After 20 years i still have to do some mundane, crappy stuff but luckily not that much. And i'm not the manager type.

I did a BA in informatics worked 6 months as a business analyst at a university then got my contract canceled.
Spent 6 months unemployed after that but with that mere 6 months experience I found employment now as A Knowledge manager for a IT firm.
I get paid WELL now.
What you should get out of this is: dont work for the government! never at least not if your white.
