Jo brother, if you had to see Africa (the REAL Africa) with ur own eyes you would not believe it. Countries that were flourishing is now on the verge of collapse due to corruption, exploitation ect. One trip to Nigeria and you will know where we are heading (no offence to anyone, just my own observation)

Batty, due to the nature of my work i have access to the financials of all coporates/sovereigns in africa and you are spot on. In most africal countries the degree of prosperity post-colonialism has been on a downward spiral ever since. Botswana is the only exception ... but does that mean we have to go live in Botswana to feel safe and have a stable economy??? I read a study yesterday indicating that the Rands true value is closer to R10/USD at the moment (ie our currency is artificially undervalued). Taking all the exogenous shocks into consideration we are in for a rough time. Expect things to get worse, MUCH worse.

Wow, now we all politicians and economists.... Guys, read an article written by the MD of I-Burst I think, will see if i can find it and post it here. This is not the first time this country has gone through this and most economists etc predicted this and if you know the signs you can see it coming. Remember when the interest rate was like 24 or 27%? Well, then the perception of the country was the same, all countries go through this. Some are not as bad, but it is all relative. Things will level out again and just have faith etc. remember 94 when everyone wanted to leave cause of the obvious change and look how far we have come since then. Will see if I can find that article and post it here. Oh yes, the first line of this was tongue in cheek hey :P

If i were the MD of i-burst i would also laugh it off and ride out the crap times. - He's got gazillions left at the end of the month.... not so here. I bet he hasn't budged from his budget(if he had one).
Ride the wave but if the peaks get too big i'm jumping ship; then again if i leave now i'll still have a ship.

This email was written by Alan Knott-Craig CEO of IBurst to his staff - makes interesting reading !!
Hi guys,

2008 has certainly started with a bang! The future was rosy on 31 December 2007, but suddenly everyone is buying candles and researching property in Perth!

A combination of recession in the USA, global equity market negativity, high interest rates, the National Credit Act and power outages have combined to create the perfect storm.

But don’t panic!

This is not the first time there’s been doom and gloom. Every few years the same thing happens. We experience massive economic growth, everyone is optimistic and buying Nescafe Gold, and holiday homes, and Merc’s. The positivity gets ahead of itself and the economy overheats, and then panic sets in because the economy seems to be collapsing when in actual fact it’s simply making an adjustment back to a reasonable level.

It happened in 1989, when SA defaulted on its international loans and the stock market and Rand crashed, it happened in 1994 when the ANC took power and everyone thought war would break out, it happened in 1998 when interest rates hit 25% and you couldn’t give away your house, and it happened in 2001 when a fairly unstable guy by the name of Osama arranged for 2 Boeings to fly into the tallest buildings in New York!

On each of those occasions everyone thought it was the end of the world and that there was no light in sight. And on each occasion, believe it or not, the world did not actually end, it recovered and in fact things continued to get better.

I think 2008 will be a tough year, but I also see it as a great opportunity to seize the day whilst everyone else is whinging and get a front-seat on the inevitable boom that we’ll experience in 2009, 2010 and beyond.

Make sure you make a mental note of everything that is happening now, because it will happen again and again, and if you don’t recognize the symptoms you’ll be suckered into the same negativity, and forget to look for the opportunities.

It’s easy to be negative. Subconsciously, you WANT to be negative! Whenever you open the papers they tell you about the goriest hi-jacking and the most corrupt politicians. Why don’t they dedicate more pages to the fact that Joburg is the world’s biggest man-made forest, or to the corruption-free achievements of the vast majority of public officials? Because bad news sells. Good news is boring.

SA still has the best weather in world! We’re lucky enough to possess a huge chunk of the world’s resources, I.e.: gold, platinum, coal, iron. The growth in India and China will continue to accelerate (India and China sign 10mil new mobile customers every month), and so will their demand for our resources. The government has already embarked on massive infrastructure projects (some of them a tad late, I.e.: electricity), and this will pump money into the economy.

We are all lucky enough to be a part of the birth of a massive and all-encompassing industry. The Internet has and will continue to change the world. The enormity of its impact is up there with the wheel, electricity, TV, telephones, and possibly man’s greatest ever invention, coffee. Not only does it open up an entirely untapped world of commerce, but it is also the ultimate disseminator of information and news. Apartheid would not have lasted 40 years if the Internet had existed! And you’re part of it!

I’m looking forward to another year of ASA complaints, IR issues, Plug & Wireless parties, BTS roll-outs, billing runs, irate customers, happy customers, orange bubbles, faulty elevators, etc, etc. The nice stuff makes me feel good, and the challenges remind me why we can beat the competition. Most importantly I’m looking forward to having fun and making memories.

So ignore the doomsayers, install a timer on your geyser, and buy Ricoffee for a couple of months.

Cheers,

Alan

Yeah ,,, he wants us to stay -- he has a vested interes

There is no doubt about it,, we live like kings compared to many places in the world

BUT ---My Mother has been hijacked ,, many of my friends have been hijacked , I have witnessed muggings ,,,shootings ,,, stabbings,,, One of my good friends was shot and killed by hijackers ,, I have witnessed someone getting shot by hijackers. There are shootouts in our shopping centres. -- where pregnant women get shot..

If you take a frog and put it in a pot of water ,,, and put it on the stove,, and let the temperature slowly rise,, the frog will not realise the temperature is rising and will stay in the pot and get cooked to death..

we are those frogs

The sad thing is,, it is really an awesome place to live --- And we have lived well here for a long time -- You have to be WAY richer in europe to live the way we live here

The only reason I am leaving is I want to have children,, and I fear for their safety and the safety of my Wife.

Batty i agree 100%, and Netro I AM an Investment analyst (part economist, part statitician, part accountant ...) I know my shit bud. Ive had a 9mm pressed against my head, my girlfriend was held up by 4 armed men whilst in the company of 3 kids ... if we think of our friends how many have been victims ... too many. SA is a fantastic place and i am as patriotic as they come BUT i have seen the reality that its not IF it will happen to you anymore but rather WHEN. Yea im venting here but fuck my grandfather fought for this country so did my father. Crime is all over the world but the racially motivated element is not always there. Economics can only carry the argument so far. They do it beacause they can, and fuckall will happen to them. I mean you get a higher sentense for not paying ur TV license than murdering some oke???

Thanks dj:lol: Netro might have come on a bit strong there  Just frustrated like all of us out there ... Africa has oodles of potential but like all african states (sans botswana) the trend will be repeated time and time again. Do you know about the proposed SADEC community? They want to open up the borders (no passports needed to travel between SADEC states) & a unified currency (think how zim's 100 000% inflation will impact on our already struggling rand). The UK wants to pull our visa free status due to that. This AA idea dreamt up by some civil servant is killing our economy but nobody has the balls to just say hey the heck with it lets get our skills back. Until then this country will bleed itself dry of skilled individuals.
