Some help needed!? was created by jo1
I have a beverage that’s supposed to be sugar free, does anyone here know how I can make sure it’s indeed sugar free, any cheap tests, or self tests one can do to be sure, coz it’s not always in the bottle that says on the label, and that usn showed us is possible to get away with in the RSA.

I would really appreciate it if someone can help.

Tanks.

Sterkte.

(Mag jy sê wat die beverage is?)

I also thought of getting glucose sticks but will they also pick up other sugars such as fructose etc... the reactions that occur with the sticks are very specific

Yeah, I also thought about fructose.
But according to some articles on google they pick up sugar in soft drinks, which is usually sucrose.

Glucostix wont work, the reaction that occurs giving the different shades of green (indicating glucose levels) is due to glucose oxidase, specific for glucose

Ok, my bad then.
Then the diabetics on the articles I found lied.
(But they also mentioned a drop of the beverage turning the stick green...)

Here you go... Make your own conclusions. :)

Is there a diabetic on the forum with glucose sticks, that is willing to try this, for jo1... ? :)

Ahh, ok.
Does regular Coke turn them green?
And Coke Zero?

I read it and not too sure if I believe it. I thought it was a scientific paper you found. Anyways I see that coke contains sucrose (not glucose) like you said. Perhaps the test tape strip she uses can detect several sugars. Also I dont know if colourants in sodas may influence the colour reaction. The stix I have are by bayer, like the ketostix, and are specific for glucose. I guess its because they test glucose in the urine which indicates spill over in the blood and most sugars (disaccharides) are metabolized to glucose as one of the metabolites.

Ok, thanks.
But I want to know if sucrose turns it green, not specifically Coke....
Maybe try some sugar dissolved in water..

P.S. Sorry jo1 for keeping your thread busy, but we're solving this for you, in your absence :P

LOL
haha

Mail me some of your glucostix...
I have sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin, dextrose, artificial sweetners, all laying around here :)

So anyways I got some sugar today, and made a sugar solution equivalent to the sucrose concentration found in coke.

The picture shows the scale of glucose concentrations and the stick changed to the first shade of green seen on the scale (1mmol/L)

Cool :) , will the stick pick up lower traces of sucrose?

Now you have an answer jo1 :)

@jo1 - Jy het nog steeds nie gese wat die "beverage" is wat jy drink nie. Komaan help die mense wat jou probeer help.

If everybody does it, is it still cheating?

That test just shows its picking up glucose. I still need to know what beverage it is that Jo1 has. I dont know how accurate the test was because the sugar solution (table sugar) I made is sucrose and not glucose, and the test is supposed to be specific for glucose, so I would say that the result is pretty much useless

1mmol/L is the lowest concentration that the stick can pick up, and since its the lowest it would indicate traces of glucose but doesn't neccesarily mean its sucrose, i can double the concentration of sugar and see if the result is the same or if it doubles, if it doesn't double on the stick then it will rule out that it is not picking up sucrose and only traces of glucose. will let you know what the result is

So anyways, doubling the sugar cocentration shows that the stick is picking up 2mmol/L so the stick is picking up sucrose (File Removed)

That looks dangerously close to the sticks and container I use for measuring acidity and Ph levels in my swimming pool.

Well the sticks u use for your pool will have pH paper on them also with a colour scale to measure pH changes. These have glucose oxidase instead of pH paper to measure glucose concentration
