Eggs: old or new school info on yolk? was created by Razorblade88
Hi guys,

So I'm sure most of us is stuffing down eggs everyday, to me its a tasty, as well as more economical way of upping my protein intake.

So my question is about the yolk. Two or three guys over the last month told me that the long existing believe that we have to use egg whites only and as few as possible yolks due to it raising your joint LDL cholesterol is not true.

Does anyone have any info on this?
I buy extra large eggs >60g for R1,80 to R2 each. Which to me seems decent. Egg whites only is almost as expensive, and is always a shlep for me to get ahold of.
Is the 8-10 yolks daily really that bad for me, or is that old school Info?

Thanks

8 - 10 yolks a day is to much.

The answer needs some explaining as it is not as simple as yes or no. A key point is that you do not eat any of those yolks with a high blood glucose level (i.e don't eat it with carbohydrates). Do not eat any foods that are known to increase LDL with carbs.

It also depends if you are one of the 25-30% of people who are very sensitive to increases in dietary cholesterol. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find answers to how many eggs per day I could eat but the studies I could find only looked at people having up to 4 whole eggs per day and there was one where a small group ate the equivalent of about 25 egg yolks (which surprise, surprise wasn't healthy).

What amount of yolks before it becomes too much? There's no reliable data on that unless there has been some groundbreaking study released in the last year. But high dietary cholesterol intake does not equate to having high plasma cholesterol levels.

From what I have seen on forums over the years I was surprised how many people said they eat 6 or more eggs a day and according to their blood work they have totally fine cholesterol. I have found the same thing with 5-6 yolks per day.

My conclusion is that it depends on if you are predisposed to a bad cholesterol buildup from high dietary cholesterol intake - 25-30% of people are.
